October 18, 2010
On Sunday the wind abated enough
to go fishing with Angel Rodriguez and his co workers. He promised
them a good time with lots of action and they were not disappointed.
Each drift in the Gut produced blues on almost every rod. These fish
were mostly in the 10 pound range. They connected on four keeper bass
and at least twenty that were just short of the 28 inch mark. What a
place Orient Point is. We were fishing just minutes from the dock.
October 12, 2010
This is a photo of a seal that
grabbed a bluefish in Plum Gut He would not let go and after a few
minutes the line broke. That sealed the deal.Everyone on board
started blubbering about it. Someone started singing You walrus hurt
the one you love the one you shouldn't hurt atoll. One guy said
,Let's catch something otter than these things. You hooked it on
porpoise said another. See,lion about stuff is sometimes how I spend
the day. Capt. Bill

October 12, 2010
On Monday the Dave Horowitz
group celebrated Columbus Day by fishing with us on the Orient Star
ll. We had plenty of blues to 12 pounds on bucktails. The youngsters
had their hands full with these big fish. We did well with porgies
at the change of tide near Gull Island. Nice day with great kids.
October 3, 2010
On Saturday the wind lightened a
bit and we fished with John Caruso and his friends. The Gut had
great fishing with many bluesand a few keeper bass. We fished for
porgies near Gull Island and many fat scup were taken home for some
great eating.
On Saturday afternoon we fished with the Destin family. Yvonne
Destin surprised her husband James with a fishing trip for the whole
family aboard the Orient Star ll. The weather was perfect with light
winds and the fishing was solid. Plenty of nice scup. James had
fished with us before and had talked of his enjoyment aboard the
boat. Yvonne organized the trip and all turned out great.
September 26, 2010
The Frank Ricciardo fishing
tournament took place on the Orient Star ll on Saturday. Here isa a
picture of the friends and relatives of Frank who annually enjoy
this contest in his honor. This year, Frank's brother Jimmy won the
event. We have enjoyed watching the Ricciardo boys grow up into fine
young men over the last ten years. Jimmy does a wonderful job of
organizing the event each year.
September 25, 2010
On Friday, Tony Meilak from Fred
Smith Plumbing hosted a group of friends and associates on the
Orient Star ll.We thought that the best action would be from mixing
it up with giant blues from 12 to 14 pounds near Gardiners Island.
These monsters always seem to show up in the fall and they are true
tackle busters. We usually had 8 fish on at a time because we were
fishing 8 rods and alternating. When the boys were tired out we
slammed the scup near Gull Island. There was never a break in the
action. What a fun trip. I forgot my memory card at home.
On Saturday we hosted the annual
Frank Riccardo Mmemorial Blue fish tournament. Jimmy Ricciardo runs
the event in honor of his brother. We planned on going down to
Gardiners to battle the big blues we fished for on Friday but the
strong wind and sloppy conditions made that unrealistic. We fished
in the Gut for awhile and there were blues and bass to be had but
the seas were angry that day my friends. After an hour or two we
headed out to the sound and found hundreds of blues stacked up on
some structure and bailed them. Most were released. Jimmy's 10 pound
chopper was the tournament winner. Good job everyone.
September 22, 2010
On Wednesday we fished with
Harry Triola, Kevin Harrahan and Tom Guba. The best part of the trip
was fishing with three guys who I used to coach in Seaford back in
the 60's. All three are fine family men with good careers.Funny how
they aged but I stayed the same.
The Gut had plenty of blues and a few stripers..no big ones for us
today but plenty of action all day. We did well with large scup
locally between tides. Great to see these guys
On Saturday afternoon Jay Ratto
brought his landscaping company crew out for some good porgy
fishing. All 26 anglers caught fish but more important, everyone had
a great time. Jay and Christine really appreciate the hard work the
crew performs and this trip was a nice way to say thanks.
On Saturday Jimmy Ricciardo
brought out some friends and fellow church members for some
outstanding bluefishing. We started the day with an hour of scupping
with large porgies coming in steadily. The big blues were down near
Gardiners and we bailed many in the 12-14 lb range. The boys kept
only a few of the smaller ones and released the rest..Really big
fish down there.
On Sunday,Walter Moller brought his friends and family, including
his grandkids out to Orient for a family fishing trip. There were
scup flying over the rails as soon as we stopped. Everyone caught
fish and some of the scup were pushing three pounds. There were some
nice seabass taken as well. The seas were calm enough for the kids
to be able to handle drifting in the race for blues and Bass. There
were all the blues you could handle and a few keeper bass too. The
weather was great and the people were absolutely great. Great job
Grandpa Walt.
September 12, 2010
On Saturday night I slept
peacefully, believing the weatherman's prediction for 5 to 10 kt
winds and looking forward to a nice day with good ppeople. Surprise!
The wind was 20 from the south east.
We were able to fish for scup in the lee of Plum Island for awhile
and then caught plenty of big blues and a few keeper bass while we
drifted bucktails, No shortage of action all day. Ben DiVenti hosted
this trip. Ben takes some of his family, friends and clients out
each year and they always have a great time.
The Lady Reelers Fishing Club
held their annual Fishing trip with all fish caught going to Long
Island Cares. The girls braved a rough start as the wind was howling
and the waves were a bit high. As the day progressed and conditions
improved the Ladies bailed scup up to nearly three pounds. These
fish are big and thick. Mate Mike cleaned over 400 scup which were
iced and delivered to a waiting refrigerator truck. The fish will be
available to various organizations for distribution around the
Island. The ladies also presented the L.I.Cares group with many
boxes and cans of food, all purchased by the members. What a great
group of people the Lady Reelers are.Any ladies out there interested
in becoming affiliated with this fun loving, fine group of people
can email me and I will forward your name to the Ladies
September 6, 2010
On Saturday afternoon we were
able to get to where the big porgies lived fow a short time before
the seas became too uncomfortable. The Paul Misthos family was able
to catch some very big fish to just under three pounds. We finished
the second half of the outing with mediums. By the time we reached
the dock in late afternoon the wind had finally dropped out. Good
fishing in the local areas will continue for the rest of the season.
Blues, bass, scup and then blacks.
The Psyllos family fished with
us on Sunday for porgies.Actually, we were able to fish in only one
location comfortable enopugh to fish and catch some scup. It sure
was breezy with gusts to 30k. Still, the kids outfished the adults
once again.
August 30, 2010
On Saturday, Paul Misthos and
his church group of friends fished with us on the Orient Star ll. We
headed towards Gardiners and found the giant fall blues we were
looking for. Most all were over ten pounds and the kids sometimes
needed a little help. Nicole, aged 10 had the bigges blue. Over 12
pounds. After awhile we switched to scup and the 26 anglers all had
their limits . Great fishing with great people.
On Sunday the Dick Hurley group
fished for giant blues and scup out in Orient. We hoped the 12 to 15
pound giants would be in their usual fall habitat and they were ..in
great numbers. We had fish on at all times and they were all over
ten pounds. The largest tipped ther scale at 15.1 We released the
biggest and kept trying to catch the smaller, more tasty ones...Hard
to do on this trip. After a few hours everyone had quite enough and
we went scupping. Nice catch of mixed sized fish PLenty to take home
as yummy fillets.
August 23, 2010
Lefty Wemssen, his dad ,brother and a bunch of Seaford grads joined
their old lacrosse coach, Capt. Mike, on a porgy and blues trip on
Sunday.Fishing was good..but the weather was a bit unsettled. Rain
on and off and the rip in Plum gut was large...but the fish were
cooperating and all caught porgies and blues...
August 21, 2010
Last week we fished with Howie Habberstad and his employees at
Habberstad Nissan and VW. We had dozens of blues of all sizes to 11
pounds. A few bushels of nice porgies and a few Bass. Jennifer
Jimenez won the pool with a nice striper. Always a great, fun filled
trip with Howie.
August 20, 2010
On Friday,we fished with the Triola family. Sarah lead the way with
many fine porgies and a few nice seabass. We all caught plenty of
fish and I got lucky with a nice fluke on a porgy rig and
clam...Beautiful weather and good fishing with great people..
On Thursday, Dave Chichanowicz who owns Creative Environmental
Designs and an Agway in Southold took his family, some friends and
most of his emnployees fishing with us.The group quickly learned the
technique needed for successful jigging and landed about 30 blues to
12 pounds. They had some very nice seabass and a bunch of large scup
as well. Great job Dave, Valery, Young dave and Joeand all the happy
fishermen on board.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of fishing with some good friends
from my college days at CW Post. Vinnie Salamone, the athletic
director at Post for many years and quarterback when I was playing
there along with Bob Higgens a great fullback and Vinnie's son
Vincent went to the south side of Montauk on Bob's beautiful 55'
Viking. We had some very nice sea bass, big scup, a few big blues
and a bass...All on bottom rigs. It's really nice to sit back and
just go fishing sometimes.
August 7, 2010
On Friday the Homan family came
to Orient for their annual family reunion. They have never had a bad
day fishing with us in nine consecutive years and this year was no
exception. It's great watching the family grow and Grandma Vicky and
Grandpa Rich have a lot to be proud of. Big porgies. big blues and a
few stripers in just a half day trip. Of course the kids let their
parents catch a few fish too
Saturday, we had the great
pleasure of fishing with a group of children, some of their parents
and Victor Colosso. Victor runs a summer Scope class for kids in the
Smithtown area and works hard at getting them involvd in the
wholesome sport of fishing. We had great action with jumbos in the
am and then mediums and a few seabass later on. The mates filleted a
lot of fish for the group. Great day, wonderful weather and
enjoyable kids. We absolutely love to take kids fishing and hope the
nice experience they had will encourage them to be fishermen for
life.
August 4, 2010
On Tuesday we fished with Diane Isnardi and her family and friends.
We were supposed to fish for porgies but the 20+ knot wind made
finding a comfortable place to fish difficult. The Gut was
relatively calm with a sw wind and flood tide, Plenty of blues to 12
pounds and we had a few bass to 32 inches as well in a half day
trip.
August 2, 2010
On Friday a Shelter Island Camp trip fished for scup near Gardiners
Island. All the fish were cleaned and presented to the camp chef for
a big fish fry.Great weather and great action made for a nice
experience for the kids.
On Saturday,Vester Rivera and some good buddies came to Orient for
some fine porgy fishing. After getting their limit of 2 and 3 pound
fish they tried their hand at bluefishing. We had some on the Gut
and some at Pigeon Rip. A very nice trip with great guys.
July 29, 2010
On a recent half day trip for Ed Pisani and Sameer Rege we did very
well on big local porgies up to three pounds. We caught and kept
four bass and some blues as well. More and more blues are showing up
which is, to me, a good thing. You can't beat the action and the
fight of a big bluefish. We also enjoy eating fresh smaller blues.
Myra has an excellent bluefish sauce for your spaghetti too. happy
to send it to all who want to try it. capt. Bill
On Wednesday we fished with Capt. Gerry McGrath and his Scope
fishing class. This is a course that many teachers take in the
summer. They travel to different ports, meet captains, fish
processors, commercial fishermen, restaurant operators and conclude
the three day coures with a fishing trip on the Orient Star ll. This
year we targeted big scup locally and then fished in Plum Gut for
big blues and a few stripers. Between tides we ventured towards the
Ruins and picked quite a few Jersey Keepers which were all
released.Mike cleaned a huge amount of big scup. Good eats for all.
Great job Gerry
July 26, 2010
This is actually a repost of
this trip. It didn't seem to appear in the reports. Terry McTigue
and some long time friends held their annual father-son fluke trip
last Saturday. They had fluke all day with Sal Pino taking top fish
honors with a 6 pound flattie. He narrowly edged out Terry who
missed by an ounce or two. Youngsters Joe and Jonathan fished for
porgies most of the trip and filled a bucket each of fish to 2.5
pounds. Great day.
On Sunday the Shoreham fire
dept. brought about twenty junior future fire fighters on a fishing
trip with us. These kids earn their own way for the trip by having
fund raisers such as car washes and other events. The kids had about
150 nice porgies, (Capt. Mike filleted all of them) a few good size
seabass and a couple of fluke. It's great to see youngsters out
there actively getting involved with their community. We love to see
kids have a great day fishing too
July 19, 2010
Ken and Cathy Marshall took
their kids and some relatives visiting from Florida out for a
twi-lite trip on Sunday afternoon. Giant porgies were flying over
the rail. Beautiful weather, fantastic fishing and wonderful kids.
Last Friday we took a camp from
Shelter Island down to Gardiners for some terrific porgy fishing.
Great action and plenty of fish for their fish fry back at the camp.
On Saturday, another fishing bachelor party get together was held in
honor of Louie Bevilacqua who will be married shortly, Brother Jim
organized the trip and the guys had a great time with big porgies.
We finished up the day fluking down at Gardiners. Best of luck Lou
July 11, 2010
Fred
Schraft and his friends from Long Island as
well as New Jersey come out east for a fluke
weekend every year. They fish for two days
concentrating on the fine fluke fishing we
have. We had some nice fluke on Saturday and
George Caloway from N.J. won the pool with a
5 pound flattie. We had a bushel of nice
scup as well. These fish are feeding on
sandeels and squid.

On Sunday the Freddie Schraft
party returned to Orient for their second day of fluking. Fred
nailed a big one on the first drift. It spit out a one pound porgy
and the fluke weighed 7.5 lbs. We stuffed the porgy into the fluke
and reweighed it to 8.5 There were some excellent fish taken. The
fish seemed to be most aggressive during the strength of the tide.
Some of the guys fished for porgies during the weaker parts of the
tide. Lots of nice scup in the area. Myra had a nice sea bass and a
5 pound fluke.
July 6, 2010
We took all the grandkids
fishing on Monday. Porgies are very strong in all the local areas
with some fish over three pounds. Avery Nowak's 3.4 pounder was the
largest. Bigger fluke seem to be heading to deeper, cooler water.
More blues are showing up and all is well in Orient
June 29, 2010
The Hamilton brothers came to
Orient a few days ago to sample some of the fine fluke fishing we
are having. Big porgies are available as well. The group released
quite a few fish, including some of keeper size.
Dan Lozano brought a group of friends and co workers to Orient for
some fine fluke and porgy fishing. Fluke are holding up well because
of the abundance of squid and sand eels in the area.
We had an opening on Sunday morning , so what did we do? We went
fishing, of course. The fluking was fine and there are plenty of
scup in the area. Mike Cataldo came along and nailed a nice 7 pound
flattie. We have weekday and a few weekend dates available. Take
home a few big fluke and your limit of porgies. Life is good.
On Saturday afternoon, Bill
Coogan had his fishing trip bachelor party on the Orient Star ll. We
had plenty of fluke and most were released. We have had many of
these groups over the years and it's always fun. More and more
people do this kind of thing as opposed to going to the city and
whatever... Bill gets married this Thursday and we wish him and his
bride all the best
On Sunday afternoon, Charlie
from Cheesy Charlie's in Southold, home of the best Pizza and soups
on the north fork had a small celebration on the Orient Star ll.
Charlie will be getting married this week and the boys got together
for a quick fishing trip. Plenty of action with the fluke and scup.
Best wishes Charlie.
On Monday, Joe Profundi brought out his brothers, son, uncles and
friends for a day of fishing on the Orient Star ll. There were some
very nice fluke caught. Plenty of porgies for those who tried for
them. The weather turned out to be great despite the weatherman's
dismal report of strong winds and thunderstorms...surprise surprise.
What a pleasure to fish with these guys who are already talking
about a fall trip.
June 21, 2010
On Sunday afternoon, Andrew and
Harvey Harrison took their Dad and Grandpa fishing for a Fathers
Day get together. 84 year old Adam had a striper, his first. We had
4 bass and a bunch of blues on the twi-light trip. Good bunch of
guys and nice thing to do for their dads

with really good people. A pleasure to fish with them
June 14, 2010
On Saturday we were happy to
take a group of anglers out fishing who had entered the Peconic Bay
Fishing Tournament. The Tournament was put together by a great guy
named Mike Ceritto and the proceeds all went to the study and
prevention Lyme Disease. We tried our best to get that one big fluke
but today we were only able to reach 4 3/4 lbs. The winner was
reportedly a little over 5 pounds. Still, everyone caught fish and
the barbecue afterwards was great. Thanks Mike and congrats on a
well run event.
Going back to Friday,we had the
pleasure of taking some anglers out who were scheduled to fish with
my neighbor, Mike, from the Prime Time. Happy to report that the
Prime Time is now as good as new and working daily. We caught a few
bass and then went to the fluke grounds. A very pleasant day all the
way around
June 8, 2010
Tuesday, the retired
electricians from local 3 Staten Island visited us for a half day
fluke trip. We had great action the whole trip and the boys took
home 8 nice keepers. Still a lot of bait (squid and sand eels) in
the area for the fluke to be interested in. Perfect drift and great
weather helped in their success.
June 6, 2010
Wayward Boys have been having
their annual reunion in Orient for many, many years. This year we
tried fluking with the boys and the fishing was excellent. The
weather was a bonus.
Terry McTigue and his friends
love their fluke fishing. And, they are good at it. When they heard
that fluke at Gardiners were spitting up squid they brought nice
ones to use as whole baits. Owen Thomas nailed the biggest at 10.1
pounds. Love to see squid in the area.
Today, Sunday, we targeted fluke
instead of bass with Nick Amoruso and his associates. We had about 7
very nice fluke in the 4 to 7 pound range. Lots of close to legal
sized fish were in the area, and squid were being spit out all day.
The wind increased steadily and eventually reached about 30 knots.
That's a lot of wind.
May 31, 2010
Monday, Memorial Day, we took
some friends and family fishing on the Orient Star ll. The kids
caught most of the fish with 8 year old A.J. Eichorn landing a
beautiful 9 pound doormat. We had some nice keepers with Jackson
Russo's 23" fluke and Harry Triola taking a nice 5 pound fish. A few
bay blues, lots of undersized fish to release and everybody had a
great time. There is nothing better than helping kids learn about
fishing. We also took the time to talk to the kids about what
Memorial day was all about
May
26, 2010
Today,Wednesday, we fished with
Dennis Cassidy on the Orient Star ll. The Gut was good on the flood
and the group nailed 6 keepers before heading down to Gardiners for
our first expedition to the Ruins area. We had 8 nice fluke to 5
pounds and saw a number of others very close to keeper size. Nice to
see some fish coming in from the sea. beautiful weather , good
fishing and a great bunch of guys. Most are retired policemen and
some are still on the job.
May 24, 2010
This report goes back to
Saturday with the Lady Reelers who had their annual fluke tournament
out in Orient. We had a few keepers early in the day and then a slow
pick until late when the tide turned. We had some very nice fluke
including Sue Schoppmann's 5-12 pounder which one the event.
Unfortunately the photo would not upload. It and other pics should
be on the website in short order. There were blues throughout the day
to livein' things up. The last hour of the trip was good fishing
with 5 nice keepers coming over the rail.
May
24, 2010
Jimmy the Candyman who owns the
Candyman shop out in East Marion held his annual fishing trip
birthday party on Sunday. The boys managed a few very nice fluke in
the am as John Hanrahan nailed a 6 1/2 pounder. Late in the day when
the tuide was right we hit the Gut for 8 keeper bass in short order.
Great trip with really good guys.
May 20, 2010
Today we fished with Burt Katz
and his friends. We targeted fluke early in the day and the small
group had 5 nice keepers. Myra Russo once again lead the way with an
8 pound beauty. We wanted to try bass and one of the main goals was
to catch Bryant his very first one.. He did catch a nice keeper and
we had some other bass as well. Beautiful weather, nice people and
some great fishing...Life is good
