Last report for 2007
After many days of wind and
rain we were rewarded with an absolutely perfect blackfish day. Flat
seas, no wind, and good fishing. Ed Ireland and his group, mostly
from the Seaford area fished with us today. We had a steady
pick of nice blackfish from 3 to 7 pounds. Looks like the fishing
will only get better in the coming weeks. We, however, are done for
the season. Time to head on down to Key Largo for the winter.
I'd like to suggest that you get in on some great fishing out here
in Orient. We have 3 boats sailing as OPEN boats and about 10 6 pack
charter boats in the area. Check them out at
www.northforkcaptains.com
October 20, 2007 On Saturday
we fished with Burt Katz and his friends on the Orient Star ll. Plum
Gut was chock full of blues and small bass. Difficult to catch
keepers today. After a hundred or so blues and many shorts we tried
bottom fishing. Still many porgies of all sizes in the area. Rosa
Jackson had the largest tog. All in all a good day with fish on at
all times.
October 15, 2007 On Monday
Charlie Hamilton and his brother Bob and friends fished with us for
blues and bass. They managed a few nice bass, countless bluefish and
many schoolie bass. Only fished the flood. The number of keeper bass
taken is directly proportional to the boat traffic. Absolutely
fantastic fishing.
October 13, 2007 We fished
with Nick Amaruso and his friends on Saturday. Plum Gut had tons of
blues and lots of bass just shy of keeper size. Big rip. Went to
Pigeon when the gut was slack and the rip there was even bigger but
the blues were larger and even more numerous. Everyone had a great
time with fish on all day
October 10, 2007 On Wednesday
we fished with Dave Horowitz, Hector Mayo and friends. The Gut had
blues and bass on both tides.Joe the deli guy seemed to have bass
on all day. We also had some great scup fishing for awhile. The rip
was huge on the ebb with a strong se wind, Flood was nice with the
same breeze. Great day
October 7, 2007 The Holbrook
Fire Dept. Engine Co. 2 had their annual bluefish trip with us on
Sunday. Best fishing was near Pigeon Rip with 5 to 10 fish on at
all times. We jigged some keeper bass too. Weather turned nasty
late. Great time for all. Biggest blue was taken by Laughing Larry.
That's Pete Iovino with one blue before it was released .
October 6, 2007 Captain Mike
ran the boat on Saturday. All reports indicate that it was an
absolute porgy blitz. Every angler reached their limit plus the
seabass were BIG. Mike didn't have time for photos...too busy
keeping the boat over the fish. Great job Mike
September 26, 2007 On
Wednesday Freddie Schraft and his buddies fished with us. Things
went well except in reverse. We anticipated slow fishing on the
flood and non stop action on the ebb. We had some nice bass and
plenty of blues but all the bass were on the incoming...none on the
ebb...Go figure. Some nice porgies rounded out the catch. Frank
Grossman's bass was the largest. Every day is different.
September 24, 2007 It'e been
Blues and porgies and a few bass during the day for us. Each trip we
see more bass. Blus are big and the scup are getting bigger and more
aggressive as fall is here. Here are some photos from the last 4-5
days. The fellow receiving the trophy (L) is Philip Gambrell whose
11 pound blue won the annual Frank Ricciardo annual Bluefish
Tournament.. That's Jim Ricciardo in the center presenting the
award, Ray Kelly from Adventures in Fishing films the trip each
year, This episode will air in Jan. or Feb on channel 20.
September 18, 2007 On Tuesday
afternoon we took a group organized by Kevin Horne to the Gut. The
trip was a bachelor party for Andy Workentein and Michael Drobet.
Andy will be married this weekend and Mike was recently married.
Fishing was a bit slow when we started as the tide was barely
ebbing, but as the afternoon progressed we caught more and more each
drift. Plenty of blues (most released) small bass (all released) and
a keeper or two.
September 16, 2007 On Sunday
Ben DiVenti and his family and friends came to Orient on their
annual outing. The morning porgy bite was the hottest of the season
as the conditions were perfect and the fish were hungry. After a
while we searched for blues near Gardeners Island. We found fish
averaging 8 pounds with some to 12 which took jigs eagerly. A group
of anglers traveled all the way from Philadelphia PA. to sample our
local porgy fishing. Kelvin Bond organized the trip and he lead the
way by being high hook.
September 15, 2007 The Lady
Reelers Fishing Club ventured out to Orient on Saturday. Not many
boats out as the winds were very strong and the Gut was pretty
sloppy. Bucktailing was good for a while and the girls boated a few
dozen blues. The Lady Reelers always take at least one trip out of
their very active schedule to donate their entire catch of the day
to Long Island Cares. The fish are distributed to the needy . The
Ladies braved pretty big waves to collect enough porgies for the
cause. I'm told that the Porgy Prowlers faction won the most fish
caught contest. A refrigerator truck met us at dockside. Commendable
job.
September 14,
2007 On Friday Sameer Rege and Ed Pisani brought their friends and
families to Orient for a great day of fishing. Blues, bass and
porgies galore. Great weather too!
September 13, 2007 Ed Marinich
brought out a group of past and present Half Hollow Hills teachers
out with us on Thursday. The gut was loaded with blues and a few
bass. They traveled to the porgy grounds and Lou Dominick, fishing
with his venerable "Stud" rod, lead the way with 22 big scup.
September 9, 2007 The weather
on Sunday was just about perfect for Howie Habberstad and his crew
from Habberstad Nissan. The boys had some great porgy fishing with
most fish approaching 2 pounds and up. When the ebb came through the
blues were thick resulting in steady action all day. What a great
place Orient Point is! All fishing was done within 15 minutes from
the dock.
September 8, 2007 On Saturday
afternoon The J.Ratto Landscaping company braved 24 knot winds and a
lumpy Plum Gut to bucktail a mess of blues. Everyone caught a few as
they passed the rods around. Much too rough to go anywhere else.
Great bunch of guys.
September 3, 2007 Larry
Mok organized a trip for his friends, family and fellow church
members on monday,Labor Day. It was breezy and a bit choppy in the
Gut but the group did a good job on the big scup in that area,
That's Tyler and his Dad Lary with the porgies. We bucktailed many
blues and some short bass in the Gut when the flood made up. Great
action all day and everyone had fish to take home for supper.
September 2, 2007 We had a
great Labor Day weekend with the family out in Southold. The kids
were excited to get to the beach and do some snapper fishing! We
fished at the Goose Creek Beach and Bridge and nailed tons of
snappers! Fishing at this bridge and creek is a walk down memory
lane for me. My parents always remind people of how I would wake up
before everyone else and head down to the bridge on my bike with my
pole, clanky metal bucket and bait net in tow! It's fun now to see
my kids create fun memories. Here's a pic of the girls and Nick with
some snappers.
September 1, 2007
On Saturday we fished with Lou Townsend and the Church of the
Massiah in Central Islip. The porgies bit well in the am for a while
but we missed the tide due to a late arrival.. Picked fish
throughout the day but waited for slack for the final . The
sharpies had 20 tO 30 large scup and others had considerably less.
These fish are not slamming the baits as yet and a little technique
is required. Still and all, a very nice day with some very nice
folks, Peter Psyllos and his sons and nephews fished with us on
Saturday. The fish bit well and they took many jumbo scup home.
Avoiding the crowds in the Gut and the race we headed down to
Gardeners for some very good bluefishing with bucktails. Can you
spot the Joe Pesce look alike in the second picture? (back row 4th
from left) Everytime he said "do I amuse you?" and "Dance Spider" we
laughed. Steve Tacz and his riends and relatives fished with us on
Saturday afternoon's twilight trip. The boys were worn out in an
hour and decided to try for porgies. Strong tides made it tough but
the group did catch a few as well as some seabass,Good bunch of
guys. One of them...Don't remember his name snapped two bass
rods...We haven't broken even one rod in the last 3 years but this
dude was strong !!
August 31, 2007 Tom Kelly took
his company employees from All Cinema Inc. out with us on Friday.
The boys did very well with the local jumbo porgies(available only
at the right tides) and then ran out to Pigeon Rip for great
bluefish action. Tom won both pools for largest porgy and biggest
blue.
August 29, 2007 Recently had
Matt from Mattituck went out fishing in the Gut with some friends
and relatives. We had blues on the ebb first and then some nice
scup near Plum Island. Pictured is young Tommy, Matt's boy, who
helped dad reel in a few blues
August 26,
2007 On Sunday the Holbrook Fire Dept-Jupiter-27 fished for blues on
the Orient Star ll. Fishing was good at Pigeon on the flood. The Gut
was a little slow for us on the ebb as there was a lot of boat
trafic. We headed back to Pigeon when the ebb started to roll and
the fishing improved with each drift. Good fishing and it will only
get better as the water begins to cool a bit.
August 25,
2007 On Saturday the Dick Hurley group targeted blues and bass in
Plum Gut. Great action with blues to 10 pounds each drift.switched
to porgies after a while and had a great time with all sized fish.
On Saturday afternoon the annual trip for Steve Molinaro and his
softball team buddies took place on the Orient Star ll. We headed
directly to Pigeon Rip and bailed blues for 3 hours of non stop
action. These boys always seem to pick a great date and tide. After
10 or so years with us they have yet to have an unproductive day.
See you next year guys.
August 24,
2007 On Friday Mayor James Garner and friends from Hempsted fished
for porgies with us. We caught at each stop. Some areas produced
jumbos and others had medium and still others had small. Sharpies
had their limits with fish to spare. A few nice seabass were taken
also. Good people,good weather,good fishing.
August 20,
2007 Dennis Cataldo sponsored a trip for the N.Y.Sportfising
Federation on Sunday. Fishing was steady with mixed sized fish
.Jamie Riemer took the biggest fish honors and Bryan F. was runner
up. Had some blues in the AM and some seabass in the mix. Good trip.
August 18, 2007 George LaMay
broght his tree service company to Orient on Saturday. They filled
their coolers with large scup and a few very nice seabass. Switching
to jigs on the flood the boys nailed many blues at Pigeon Rip for a
great day. Our afternoon trip saw a few blues in the Gut and the
porgies were very finicky. I think they were influenced by the great
pressure drop in anticipation of the storm we had Friday night. The
horrendous winds on Saturday kept us at home along with almost
everyone in the port.
Captain Mike ran the bopat on
Thursday when he took out some friends from Babylon. They loaded up
on the local jumbo porgies and then ventured to the race for some
good bluefish and bass action.
August 15, 2007 A friend of
mine from Orient invited me out fishing today.Ed Arnold has a
beautiful fast Regulator named the EA and we ran to the Race to try
our luck live baiting bass. We did well and I had a 18 pounder and a
28 pounder. Rough fishing in the rip itself but that's where the
fish were. Nice treat to let someone else drive the boat. Capt Bill
Russo
August 12, 2007 Great trip
this Saturday with Burt Katz and Martin Keane. Many large scup and
plenty of blues in Plum Gut and local spots. That's Myra Russo with
son Capt. Mike with one of her blues
August 9, 2007 Bob Henry brought
his family out fishing on the Orient Star today. They had fabulous
porgy action for a few hours until the ebb began to run. Switching
to bucktails in the Gut, they landed blues from 4 to 12 pounds for
hours. We haven't seen that many fish in the Gut all season. There
were a few bass too but the blues were so voracious it was hard for
the bass to compete.
August 7, 2007 Had a bunch of trips since
last week. Computer trouble kept me from reporting. Last Wednesday
we fished with Creative Environment Designs. Lots of mixed size scup
near Gardeners. David Julian had the pool with a nice 3 pound fish.
On Thursday Jim Maino and the Italian American club chased the fast
moving blues for a while and jigged a couple of dozed to 10 pounds.
Lower Gardenes had smaller porgies but we landed on some really big
fish closer to Plum Island. Lots of 2 to 3 pound fish were taken.
That's young Kyle Krause, future super mate, with his own 2.9 pound
porgy
August 6, 2007 On Monday we fished with
Sparkle Pool Service lead by Paul Lauria. The blues were thick at
Pigeon Rip.
As we neared the porgy grounds the wind began to blow harder and
harder. The trip was converted into a half day as the seas were
becoming uncomfortable..
There are seals around Gull Island. In August?
August 2, 2007 We took the Homan family
fishing on Thursday afternood for their annual family reunion and
fishing trip. They had super porgy action with jumbos galore near
Plum Island. As soon as the ebb came through the blues arrived and
we were hooking 3 to 5 at a time A few keeper bass were in the
mix. This was all done within 10 minutes from the dock!
No fishing on Sunday as we took the Southold Fire Dept. on their
annual cruise to anywhere. This year we went up both the Connecticut
River and the Niantic River.
July 31, 2007 On Saturday we fished with
Paul and his church friends. Paul owns Vema Construction. We
targeted Big Porgies near Plum Island and hit the tide window just
right. Many 2 to 3 pound scup were taken. 13 year old Demi Kaitery
had the largest porgy. We gave the blues a good try on the ebb in the
Gut with just a few for our efforts. Stronger tides are around the
corner and the blue-bass day bite should improve
Covanta Energy joined us on Sunday. We
opted to stay on the porgies most of the day. Again the jumbos
cooperated when the tide was right. It remains frustrating to see
millions of scup on the sonar but they only bite when the tide is
right..at least the jumbos are behaving that way. Jose Santos had
the largest scupo 3.2 pounds and Stephanie Saraceni was runnerup
with a 2.9 pound fish. We traveled down to Gardeners for more
action. There are plenty of mixed sized fish down there. Also had a
few fluke on clam bait..
July 26, 2007 This report is
from last Sunday...Been away. The annual Dennis Cataldo sponsored
fluke tournament takes place each year on the Orient Star. This year
eight anglers competed and we fished lower Gardeners Bay. Probably
caught 80 fluke and we kept 14 good ones. The keepers we had were
all 3 tp 5 pounds. There were porgies around if you wanted them and
seabass as well. Dennis himself won the contest with a fish of 6
pounds. Young Michael Cataldo had 3 keepers
July 15, 2007 On Thursday we fished with the Knights of
Columbus, lead by Jim Maino. We targeted large scup for a while and
found the fish plentiful and large but a bit skittish; typical
bright sunny day behavior. Traveling to Gardiners we caught fish
after fish while releasing many. Finally, landed on some large fluke
off Green Hills. Frank Gambino had the largest at a respectable 7
pounds. Pat Petro had a 6 and there were other 4's and 5's in the
catch
We had a great time on Friday while
putting a group of parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren
together. We started in the Gut and the adults helped the youngsters
wrestle some large blues to 10 pounds. We were rewarded for our
efforts by landing a 32 pound bass right at the end of the flood.
The kids had a great time catching and releasing fluke and some
porgies.
July 10, 2007 On Saturday we fished the Gardiner's area
for fluke with Jimmy Jacobson and his friends. Good action all day
winding up with 24 keepers and a few seabass and porgies
On Sunday a family group lead by Jack
Heim fished with us. We took many bluefish and small bass in the Gut
and at Pigeon Rip on the ebb and then took about 5o jumbo porgies
during the change of tide. When the flood started to roll there were
some nice keeper bass mixed with the blues
July 3, 2007 Fred Schraft and his
buddies spend a few days out here in the East End each year and fish
with us for two days. We spent Saturday at Gardiners Bay fishing for
fluke. Had 18 nice keepers. Largest 5 pounds even. On Sunday we
stopped off at the porgy grounds for an hour of non stop action. We
kept only the jumbos and Mike did a great job(as usual) filleting
and deboning all the fish. Sam Maitra again won the big fish pool
with a 4 poound fluke on Sunday
A group lead by Felix LoCicero had a
great mixed bag day of fishing with us oN Friday. We started in the
Gut with bass to 18 pounds and a bunch of big bluefish. Hit the
jumbo porgies for an hour with fish to two pounds and finished the
day with some nice fluke at the Ruins
Jason Bacher took his grandchildren and
their friends fishing on the Orient Star ll. We opted for a catch
and release trip and the kids landed over 30 fluke, carefully
releasing all of them.
June 27, 2007 Fished on Windy
Saturday with Burt Katz and his friends and family. Had terrific
jumbo porgies to 2.5 & 3 lbs! Went fluking when wind subsided. Gary
Katz had the largest fluke. 3.5 pounds
Kevin Dunn organized a fishing bachelor
party on the Orient Star ll on Saturday afternoon. We went to East
Marion and Rick Aurigemma had the largest fluke. A nice 4 1/2
pounder. Dropped the boys off at Claudios for dinner and more
revelry. Great bunch of guys. Good job Kevin and best wishes Sean.
The wind died down on Sunday for Pete
Stautenberg and his company, Environment East. We did a great job on
large scup near Gardiners Island for a few hours and then traveled
to the fluke grounds We had some nice fluke in the 3-4 pound range
and plenty of last year's keeper sized fish. Everyone had plenty of
fish to bring home for dinner. Erin Dickerson and Myra Russo are
shown with some of the giant porgies around
On Monday, Capt. Jerry McGrath joined us
with students from his summer Scopes class of teachers. We settled
in on those giant porgies again for some non stop action. Fluking
was a bit slower on Monday than it had been all weekend. Slow drift?
Still Joe Pafundi had a pair of nice fluke. Joe, Vivienne Rieger
The
Orient Star ll donate a fishing trip to "Ducks Unlimited" as a
raffle prize to be used as a fundraiser. Janet Dickerson won the
raffle. We took 6 bass and Many bluefish in 4 hours fishing in Plum
Gut. Bill Gaffga had the largest bass. Some of the blues reached 12
pounds. Great day, great people.
June 4, 2007
On Sunday we hosted the
Lady Reelers Fishing Club on the Orient Star ll. The group had a
pick of fish throughout the day taking 21 keepers as well as Laura
Blaikie's nice 10 pound weakfish. Gale Kaufman barely edged out
Grace Licato for top fluke honors with a fish of nearly 5 pounds.
One never knows what one will see around Greenport. An evil looking
submarine was seen lurking around the harbor. Rumor has it that he
was targeting fluke fishermen with illegal fish aboard. Beware!!
On Saturday a group lead
by Jimmy Jacobson fished the Gut on the Orient Star ll. The boys had
5 keeper bass and quite a few blues. Tim Lamere's 28 pound striper
took top honors. We also hit the Ruins for an hour and landed 4
keeper fluke and many shorts for a well rounded great day.
On Friday the Wayward
Boys had their 49th annual reunion and fished with us on the Orient
Star ll as they have done since '89. We stayed in Plum Gut and had 4
keeper bass to 26 lbs taken by Gerry Coughlin. Plenty of blues were
taken and most were released.
2/24/2007 Took an
old college buddy of mine, Paul Wolfrum, bass fishing in the Gut on
Tuesday. Paul landed two twelve pounders, his first ever bass . I
was lucky enough to land one of 26 pounds.
5/20/2007 Saturday's trip for
Burt Katz and friends saw plenty of blues, many fluke.Joe Rennison
had 20..keeping 3 nice oneS and a good time for all. Dennis
Cataldo's 4 3/4 pounder was the largest while Andrew Keane had a
nice 4 pounder in the mix.
John Acosta was treated to a fishing bachelor party on Sat.
afternoon opting for stripers instead of strippers. The boys had 5
keepers in the Gut on the ebb using green and white bucktails.
On Sunday The Imperial Sportsmen worked Hard for their keepers as
Bill Christian lead the way with a 3 1/2 pounder. Lots of large
throwbacks and some blues were taken.

managed 8 nice keepers with some blues in the mix.Lots of nice fish
in the area.
On Saturday a group lead by Paul Wolfrom targeted fluke in the same
area and took home 18 keepers and some large blues. Pat Crispi from
Pat'S Corner in Seaford's 5 pounder took the pool. Armand DeLuca,
Johnny Sinker and Lou Dominick also had large fluke for their
efforts.
5/6/07 nice 61/2 lb fluke taken
yesterday. We had some nice fish and had to release a few 19 in
fish, still, 4 of us managed 8 keepers.. in a few hours.
